If you’ve been sleeping for the past 5 years, a flash mob dance (FMD) is where a group of people, often strangers to each other, show up at a pre-arranged time and place.  Music starts to play.  Everyone dances the same dance they’ve practiced in advance.  When it ends, everyone walks away immediately as if nothing happened.  No clapping.  No fanfare.  Just a moment where music pulled people together to connect.

And now here’s YOUR chance to do one and check it off your bucket list.

What:

Like eating peanut M&Ms in a Frappuccino, if you haven’t done it before, it’s kinda hard to describe the feeling.  People FMD for tons of reasons: to connect, to think they’re famous ‘cause they’re on YouTube, to avoid going for a haircut.  We’re doing this one just for the helluvit.  Oh yeah, and to raise some coin for some excellent charities that support hawt dance and kewl youth in Vancouver.  The more people that come out, the more intense the experience.  We have dozens confirmed and want a hundred more.  You don’t have to donate but it’s a good way to get money from others too afraid to jump in. Lol.

Why:

  1. 1.    Start by passing this along. Get as many involved in dancing, and hopefully donating, as possible. Send a blast email to your list. Facebook, Twitter, text - whatever. Help get the word out.  We’ve already got a crowd coming - let’s get a mob out on Friday September 10th @ 7:00PM

  2. 2.    Next get practicing. Click on the YouTube training video above.  The moves may seem a bit much at first, but stand in front of a mirror with your computer and just keep pausing and repeating - you’ll get it.  No one expects you to be Michael Jackson (whew) but if you’re worried about looking foolish, all you need to do is spend a little time with it.  Organize a group practice with pals.  Leave it after 20 minutes and come back to it later.  A cocktail might help.  It’s all in the hips baby.

  3. 3.    Show up.  When you arrive at Bute & Nelson, try not to look obvious.  Stay nearby but don’t just stand in the intersection.  Act normal like you’re looking at the newspaper boxes or checking your phone.  Music will start from the big house on the corner.  You’ll have several seconds of lead music like in the training video above to get into the intersection, facing Stanley Park.  Shake it!  After, resist the urge to cheer.  Simply walk away.  Get your pals to join others in video taping it for YouTube.  You can laugh and cheer watching it there - have a blast!

How:

rain or shine
